Rotary Stirling Engine
Rotary Stirling Engines are likely to replace their current counterparts in the near future. They will be more efficient as they can have less moving parts and can operate using simpler principles. These engines also convert the energy they acquire directly into rotary motion, instead of having to convert reciprocating (up and down) motion into rotary motion as in most stirling engines.
As a result, they may find themselves being used in practical applications such as power generation using solar energy. There are several examples of rotary stirling engines currently being researched. Emachineshop have designed and built one such engine although i have never seen it in operation.
Mdevink, a Youtube user, has designed several high temperature one-off models, subscribe to his youtube channel, he is a master of mechanical engineering and stirling engine design. Here is a video showing one of his designs -
